In 2023, some Marshalls consumers may have to travel further. A store in Philadelphia is shutting.
According to TJX's vice president of communications, the Marshalls on East Market Street will close permanently on January 14.
"We are always analysing and revising our real estate strategy," he added, "and our decision to terminate this business reflects that."
"We appreciate our clients' loyalty in Philadelphia and welcome them to visit our adjacent Marshalls on South Swanson Street and T.J. Maxx on Market Street for excellent prices."
Marshalls is closing for the second time this month. On December 8, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reported that the company was closing a Minneapolis operation.
"We appreciate our Minneapolis customers' devotion and encourage them to visit our adjacent locations, like the Marshalls in Roseville and the T.J. Maxx in Saint Paul," he said.
The planned store closures are "not indicative of broader intentions for countrywide Marshalls closures.
The company's CFO stated "expected store expansion across all of TJX's retail networks" in February 2022.
"You'll see that we've expanded our Marshalls retail base this year," he remarked.
"Marshalls had 1,148 locations as of January 29, 2022. On October 29, 2022, Marshalls will have 1,171 shops."
